Diet Induced Thermogenesis for Weight Loss
Many times before I have mentioned that to increase out metabolic or fat burning rate, we should eat small frequent meals and never skip breakfast. As the act of frequent eating, that too at certain times of the day, esp at the breakfast time helps burn calories. The term by which this process is referred is called Diet induced thermogenesis (DIT).
Our body’s ability to burn fat is directly proportional to our body’s ability to expend energy. Daily energy expenditure consists of three components: basal metabolic rate, diet-induced thermogenesis and the energy cost of physical activity.
Diet-induced thermogenesis is the process by which energy is expended during digesting, absorbing and metabolizing the food we consume. Basically, thermogenesis is the number of calories burned when the body breaks down the food that we eat. Follow these tips to increase our energy expenditure through DIT?
TIP 1: Eat something every couple of hours.
Reason: Every time we eat, some of the energy from the food we eat is burned off as heat for the purpose of food break down and digestion. Thus, the act of eating raises our metabolism. Eating every couple of hours keep our metabolism constantly burning via heat.
TIP 2: Drink a lot of water.
Reason: Adding a full glass of water to the equation up the ante of thermogenesis.
TIP 3: Don’t overeat any meal
Reason: Do I need to give a reason for this
As I always say it is not about the calories in the food, it is about expending those calories. And more about the nutrition in the food!
