How does Air Conditioning affect Our Health

Hi all!!

The mercury is soaring! I know it is damn hot as summer is at its peak. I read a cartoon strip about a corn going out in the heat and returning as a pop corn πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

How does Air Conditioning affect Our Health

The schools and colleges are closed as all students are enjoying their summer vacation. But, what about office goers? Well, offices don’t give summer vacation! So, how is your office like? Must be fully air-conditioned. Most probably bone chilling out there. Have you ever thought that air-conditioning can affect our health adversely?

Before jumping on to that let me jot down the benefits of AC.

β€’ The use of AC increases physical and intellectual activity. No wonder offices have ACs installed.

β€’ Results in improved comfort levels. Makes you feel fresh throughout the day.

β€’ Prevents allergens such as pollens from entering into the premises.

β€’ Air quality is improved.

Let me add that coming home from the hot summer sun and being welcomed by the AC is total bliss. I have no words to describe the feeling! Your tiredness and discomfort is put to rest. It feels as if an AC is the best of all human inventions. I am sure you will agree with me. But in the long run is this bliss going to affect us negatively??
Many researchers believe that air conditioning overuse can result in several health problems. I am talking about ACs at workplaces at this juncture.

How does Air Conditioning affect Our Health

β€’ It causes trouble for those with sinus trouble, causing their heads to become blocked.

β€’ People exposed to prolonged air conditioning are more susceptible to colds, flu and other minor ailments in comparison to those who work outdoors.

β€’ It has also been proven that the body undergoes a certain amount of stress when it is forced to go from a boiling hot environment into an air conditioned one. Over time this change of temperature can cause problems.

β€’ Those who spend too much time in an air conditioned environment are not able to readily cope with hot summer temperatures. This is very true because when there were no air conditioners people still used to adapt themselves to the heat but today we are unable to tolerate the summers without ACs. What used to be a luxury is now a necessity.

β€’ Many people fall sick by extreme variances between outside and inside temperatures. It is best advised not to keep moving in and out of an air-conditioned environment.

β€’ It leads to dry eyes causing scratchiness and a burning sensation in the eyes.

β€’ Staying in AC for long makes you fat as it makes you to start bingeing. I know this may sound strange but it is true as the energy stores of the body decrease.

β€’ Cold air can aggravate joint pains, arthritis and neuritis.

Now for the above cons of the AC you just can’t resign your attractive job and spoil your career right? So, we need to find a solution for most of the things.

How does Air Conditioning affect Our Health

Here is what can be done

β€’ For dry eyes eat omega-3 fatty acids, use a humidifier.

β€’ To prevent dehydration and headaches, drink sufficient water and fluids; carry something to cover your head. Give time to adjust your body temperature before stepping in and out of the office.

β€’ For joints pains all you can do is cover up and make sure the vents are not blowing at you directly. Keep moving yourself. Keep changing your position while you are seated on the chair.

β€’ For a healthier environment ensure that the filters are cleaned regularly.

Enjoy the cool breeze of the AC but not too much of it. Everything within limits is ok. πŸ™‚

It’s a very valid point that you have raised vinita.. I want to add a few points. 1. Spending a lot of time in AC makes our bones weak. The office goers should keep moving out in the sun for vit D and AC cabins are totally sun blocked.. wrote something similar here
